Ahh, remember back in the good ol' days

"Out of life's school of war: What does not destroy me, makes me stronger." ~Friedrich Nietzsche

So I think that's supposed to mean I'm stronger now...maybe after I get some sleep.

Oh wait, almost forgot...Yay! The semester is over! Woohoo! I survived! So, I think it went ok, but the way people like Dr. Genik write finals, you never know, so I'm gonna say I got at least a C (which would mean I'd have to get a 0 on basically all my finals).

Now, I'm going to work on campus for a week while staying in a friend's row-house, go home, then work again for the last week of break. Hopefully it doesn't get too boring. I think a few people will be around until Saturday evening.

"That (tests) is one of the hazards of being a student." ~Dr. Murty

That was a terrible way to start the week. I slept bad, but did manage to wake up on time. Dr. Genik let us start the thermo final early, so I got there at 7:30. The test was scheduled from 8:00-10:00. I left a little before 10:30 still not finished and trying to figure out how I got negative exergy. In case you can't read into statements: that's not even remotely possible.

ME analysis almost went better. I got the first three, I think right, but we had never actually done a problem like the last one. Dr. Murty had just introduced the first few steps in the last lecture. I guess he figured we'd be fine since it was open book, except for the book is absolutely useless and the moron who wrote it should be burnt in a pyre of "Rao's Numerical Methods for Engineers."

So...full of optimism we gaily skip into the remainder of finals week joy.

"Examinations are formidable even to the best prepared, for the greatest fool may ask more than the wisest man can answer." ~Charles Caleb Colton

I can't believe I spent 10 hours on my ME analysis project, and the stupid program still didn't work right. It was returning answers really close to the right numbers, but the intermediate outputs were all wrong. Add to that one test, a CAD project, a theology paper, and a liberal dose of homework, and it becomes time to start finals week. At least I get two days off to study.

I want sleep

"Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." ~Albert Einstein

Ok, I've been promising to add some "cool" stuff to the site for a long time now, and I bet people have started to think it's not gonna happen. Well, all you doubters...scroll to the bottom.

Yeah, that's right. That is a counter. It ain't the cheap kind you find by doing a google search for "free webpage counters." Nope. I spent many hours which I should have dedicated to schoolwork writing the page long script that generates that one sentence. If I figure out what it should look like, I'll go ahead and make it prettier, too.

"Thanksgiving is a typically American holiday...The lavish meal is a symbol of the fact that abundant consumption is the result and reward of production."~Ayn Rand

Turkey is good stuff. Not the slimey, pressed, 75% water kind they serve in the commons. I mean real turkey. But Thanksgiving is over, and I'm back at school doing homework. So, no more turkey... unless I can convince Sarah to let me help get rid of some of hers, since she cooked an 18 lb bird for 4 people.

Monday is the start of "dead week." Of course, it's never really dead, there's just no tests. The title has no effect on the amount of homework, papers, or quizzes professors choose to deal out. Hopefully it's not too bad. Then, as soon as it's done, I get to take finals. Yay!

Great story: Coming back from home, some random senior citizen in a Taurus decided he had more right to a section of Lombard Street (occupied by me at the time) than I did. Fortunately, I saw him heading my way and braked in time for him to change lanes with a little room to spare. I guess I should've honked, because I don't think he ever saw me, even though we were perfectly abreast when he made his move.

By the way, the men's team lost to UW 0-1, so their out of the tournement, too.

"I knew Clive was up there somewhere"~Garret Smith, Head Coach

Well, Clive couldn't turn the weather against our opponents this weekend. It was such a great game, it was painful to see it lost. Merlo Field was pretty much packed, and they battled scoreless for 110 minutes before going into penalty kicks. I had a bad feeling about pk's, because our keeper was new, and didn't seem like a pk keeper. Oh well. They did great, and Sinclair will be back next year. Given the way they played this year, they will be unstoppable with her. The guys are now going into their second week of tournement by facing UW on Wednesday.

Hopefully school isn't too bad this week. I have two tests, fluids and thermo, but I've been doing well on thermo tests and homework, and I don't even need to do well in fluids since we get to drop a test grade. I also have an extra credit paper I'm starting on for theology.

"Reality is the leading cause of stress amongst those in touch with it."~Jane Wagner

Thank goodness this week is over. Wait...it's only Wednesday. Well, for all practical purposes, it's over. I really should have procrasinated a little less over the weekend, but I wasn't exactly helped by a severe case of writer's block while trying for several hours on Sunday to start my theology paper. That lasted until about 12:00 last night. No worries though, it's finished, proof-read, and turned in. The ME analysis test also seemed to go reasonably well, considering I've been unable to do the homework problems. I only have thermo homework and a theo quiz left.

The Good Charlotte concert was last night in the Chiles Center as well. Given the amount of work I had, I considered skipping it in spite of having already bought the discount ticket. Didn't matter... the concert ended well before the writer's block. I was dead tired from studying though. The people I was with thought I wasn't enjoying it. I really was. It was my first concert and it was pretty cool, despite only a mild interest in the bands. I guess they were just puzzled why I was sitting down, not moving while everyone else was standing and cheering and bobbing their heads. I didn't have the energy.

We didn't have enough players for our last soccer game because the captain wrote the wrong time in his email. 7 vs 11 didn't work out too well, especially since the weather was terrible, so we forfeited. I'm gonna miss having games on Sundays. On the other hand, the ladies beat Nebraska 4-1 this week, and the men were voted into the last spot for the playoffs. More impressively, despite their poor record, they get the privilege of beating U of O in the first round. Plus, the men's cross country team in going to the national tournement. Gonzaga who?

I think if I write more often, the posts will be shorter.

"The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity."~Ellen Parr

I forgot to jump online and brag to the world I got a 98 on my fluids test. Rock on! Since we get to drop one test grade and I got a 95 on the first one, I don't really need to take the third test. Next up: ME Analysis test.

Right now, I feel kinda bored. I have too little time to actually go do something right now, but not so little that I can't procrastinate. Therefore...I procrastinate.

Almost forgot. Girls won the first round against Denver 1-0! Next up: Nebraska. Our playoff bracket this year is ridiculous. It also has UNC and Santa Clara in the 3rd and 4th rounds. The final should be a breeze for whoever wins the semi's.

"Change is inevitable...except from vending machines." ~Unknown

We're not talking about the soccer game today other than to note that the other team, particularly that annoying little keeper, really pushed the limits of my patience. I don't know how he survived his comments to our big Austrian sweeper, who is far more tempermental than me.

To make the morning interesting, Father said after Mass that we would begin a gradual move to be more in line with the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. He also made available the document I quoted above and stated that one of the goals was uniformity. This could be a good sign, except he also noted that there are no kneelers in the chapel.

Other news: I think I did really well on my fluids test, I'm going over to Sarah and Dan's for dinner and I think I just got a 2nd degree burn from radiator.

"If law school is so hard to get through... how come there are so many lawyers?"~Calvin Trillin

Wow! I got a 96 on my thermo test! Plus I got two points on the bonus question, although I didn't know who played Leslie Groves in Fat Man and Little Boy. Now I just have to survive the fluids test on Thursday and my week is done.

As for the wine: I had a glass after dinner Sunday and it wasn't bad. It definitely has a strong flavor. It needed to be had with steak or else be chilled, though, and I did neither. I'm having another glass now, after chilling it (much better) and spending 30 minutes trying to find a corkscrew without causing a scandal. I guess I need to get me one of those. The guy who I borrowed from last time wasn't in.

"Wine is bottled poetry."~Robert Louis Stevenson

I finally made my first alcohol purchase today. It was a Sutter's Home Merlot, but I haven't opened it yet. I'll try it after dinner tonight and let you know how it tastes.

As for soccer, we lost again. 1-3. The most frustrating part is that we dominated the game, but we never made anything happen in front of the goal, and they got a few fast breaks that they did make something happen out of. It was a repeat of China vs. Canada, and again, the dominant team lost. By the end of the game, the other team was totally worn out, but we still couldn't settle the ball down for a decent shot. On a brighter note, I've seen next week's opponent play, and I know we will beat them.

"You were a stranger to sorrow: therefore Fate has cursed you"~Euripides

It would appear that my soccer team is cursed after all. We held our last opponent scoreless for 85 minutes, and had several chances ourselves to score, but it all came to naught. One of their forwards managed to get a foot on the ball as our keeper was in the process of scooping it up and bounced it around him into the goal. It was a lucky pass, lucky to get knock it away from the keeper, lucky to control it before the keeper recovered...and unlucky for us.

Speaking of unlucky, the second thermo test was today. Not that I think I did bad, just thermo tests aren't something to be considered good. Two of my answers seemed disproportionate, but not implausible, and I know my method was good.

I did my pre-registration today. Can you believe it's that time of semester already? It seems like not much time has passed, but it's already the end of October. I don't have any plans for Halloween, so I'll probably just catch up on sleep. Maybe I'll also get started on converting the site from HTML to PHP. The scale of the task is more than a little bit daunting. I think my C++ from class will help me some, though.

Meanwhile, Beacon editor Joe Kuffner continues his attempts to make the entire student body hate the senate.

"Of all noises, I think music is the least disagreeable."~Samuel Johnson

Wow, I actually spent the money and got a CD player for my car. It makes a huge difference. I got a Panasonic from Cartoys, and they installed it free. Not only does it give a better sound and more of it out of my stock speakers, but I think the radio reception is a little better, as well.

Whoa. It's been a week and a half. Unfortunately, I haven't been as busy as much as lazy, although it has been plenty busy as well. Fall break was nice, but felt very short. Hopefully I can work in the time to get that PHP thing going for this page.

In the meantime, I have my second thermo test next week, then fluids the week after. Oh yeah, I got my ticket for the Good Charolette/Eve 6/Goldfinger concert hosted in the Chiles Center (finally) on Nov. 18th.

"He not busy being born is busy dying."~Bob Dylan

Definitely been a few days now, and I haven't even posted, much less worked on upgrades. Needless to say, school has been trying desperately to suck the life out of me. I won't even try to cover everything. Ask me about it later. You might also be interested to find out how I accidentally broke into somebody else's car.

I guess there's only two things worth mentioning. First, it's fall break. I'll be working for a couple of days, then going home. No cool trips or parties or anything. Maybe in the spring. Second, I had another soccer game today, and we lost. We were playing two guys down after I showed up (mapquest gave me some terrible directions), and although we led for a while, between the keeper being unable to keep his footing in the mud and fatigue, we gave up several goals in the second half.

Now back to my restful break. Hopefully I'll get some more recent pictures posted.

"It is dangerous to be right when the government is wrong"~Voltaire

I haven't written in a couple days, but I don't feel like catching up right now.

I just got back from working on a project in the lab in engineering, and I'm pretty pissed. Public Safety showed up and kicked all of us (about a dozen) out because we "didn't have after hours passes." Oh really? Since when do we need an after hours pass and how do we get them? Both officeres admitted they were pretty new, but they claimed this has been the rule for a long time. Every one of us knew that's not true, because every one of us has spent many late nights, some people all night, in that lab over the last three years, and it's only been a problem once: the week a bunch of laptops disappeared. We were told it would be "100 times better" for ourselves if we did leave, and if we chose to stay, we would be given citations and have to talk with Christine Pesetski, who's in charge of the student judicial and disembowlment committee.

I guess I get to wake up really early tomorrow and sit outside until they open it up again. We really need to be able to use the programs on those computers. If they're going to pull crap like this very often they'd better start making it known and not choosing when to enforce based on their inner sadist tendencies.
