Design Considerations
The many events of the Formula SAE competition will push the limits of the car and driver in every aspect. A properly designed car will cover keep running in any conditions it may encounter on the racetrack. This means accounting for plethora of concerns. The major ones are listed below.
- Frame - The frame must support the weight of the driver and engine and withstand vibrations from the engine and the track. It must also protect the driver in the event of a collision or rollover.
- Engine - The engine will be pushed hard through five driving events. The restricted air-intake mandated by the rules means reduced power. Fast-paced, hard driving will put strain on the cooling and lubrication systems.
- Suspension and Drivetrain - The suspension helps protect the frame and improves handling. The drivetrain transfers power from the engine to the wheels and is a critical subsystem.
- Safety - This is the paramount concern. The cars move fast and hot fluids run through their engines. The winner gains respect and bragging rights, but the stakes are not high enough to face undue risk of injury or death.
- Reliability - With stiff competition, a team must finish every event to have a chance at winning. Even a small failure can mean the difference between a top 10 finish or going home disappointed.
