Competition Events

The Formula SAE Competition consists of nine static and dynamic events worth a total of 1000 points. The static events will take place both before and at the competition in Pontiac, Michigan, and the dynamic events will be run by a minimum of 4 drivers per team.

Static Events

Event Description Points
Technical Inspection This inspection is intended to ensure that the vehicle meets all of the FSAE rules, both in regards to safety and conformity. No points are awarded, but all cars must pass to continue. 0
Manufacturing Analysis The students prepare a written cost report beforehand and discuss the report with the judges at the competition. The manufacturing analysis section is judged based on the quality of the report, the cost of the car (lower is better), and the manufacturability of parts. 100
Presentation To fit in the scenario of the competition producing a prototype for production, entrants must make a presentation to "sell" their car to a manufacturing firm. The goal is to show that the car is a viable product. 75
Design The final static event is an evaluation of the design of the car. The design event attempts to determine the engineering effort that went into developing a product that meets the design goals. Innovation can be a major plus. 150
Total Points: 325

Dynamic Events

Acceleration The acceleration event measures how fast each car can accelerate in a straight line in 75 meters. 2 drivers will each make 2 attempts and the fastest car will set the high score. 75
Skid Pad The skid pad also involves 2 drivers making 2 attempts each. The track is a tight figure-8 used to demonstrate cornering ability. 50
Autocross The autocross challenges a car's manueverability, handling, acceleration, and braking. It is run without competing cars on the track, and time penalties are added for knocking down cones. 150
Fuel Economy The fuel economy event is run simultaneously with the endurance event. Fuel consumption will be monitored during the 22 km run and converted into Liters/km. The maximum rate is 26 L per 100 km. 50
Endurance The final and most exciting event, run with multiple cars on the track at once, is the endurance race. Two drivers will split the 22 km run on a tight track that stresses every part of the car to the limit. Many cars do not finish. 350
