If you're really bored, read this, otherwise, go do something productive.
Version 2.0 is officially launched as of December 19th, 2004. This is the result of 5 months of
learning and work in my spare time. While the layout is for all intents and purposes finished, I plan
to continuously add features. The status of all pages will be tracked individually on the Site Bytes
page.
The plans are for Version 2 to make use of some of the potential that the PHP Hypertext Processor
and MySQL database add to the site. This is to include a dynamically managed blog with the option for
visitors to reply to my comments with their own comments, questions, and anecdotes. The guestbook is
an entirely new feature to let guests leave their mark and give me an idea what sort of people have
visited. I've added a brief porfolio to complement the resume posted in Version 1 in case I have a
need to show potential employers some of my work. The site will also include an index of memorable
quotes, both from people I know or from famous people. There will be a personal biography, since all
personal sites have one of those, and possibly a section for some of my longer-winded ramblings. I
also intend to include a database of interesting links. Random content, such as a poll, an event
countdown timer, and whatever else I feel like at any given instant will also be included from
time to time. Version 2 will also include a contact form, which allows visitors to send me emails
directly from the site.
Perhaps the most challenging but most appealing change will be the addition of a database-driven
photo-gallery. This will allow me to add and sort photos much more easily than the hand-coded HTML
used in Version 1, and provide for many new features within the gallery, like comments and ratings.
All of the content from Version 1 will be stored away safely in my archives section, where it can
be viewed for old-times sake.
That pretty much wraps up version 2.0.1. The official version number will increment as changes are
made, because making numbers bigger makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something. The minor number
(2.0.X), will change for significant bug fixes and simple features. The major number (2.X.1) will
change for the addition of more significant features, like the poll or photo gallery. The version
number will only change if I make a major modification that affects the operation of the entire site.
I am planning to eventually develop a version 3. This will not happen until all of the planned features
for version 2 are complete. There are no definite plans at the moment, but the site will probably not
change much visually and significant new features will not immediately accompany it. The changes will be
done to make the site more modular through the wide-ranging use of functions and classes, so that future
large-scale changes will be much simpler. My timeline is 2-4 years, so I expect it will actually happen
sometime between 6 years from now and never.
